Help for being successful in cadet recruitment stage

Post by Gally2 » Tue Nov 19, 2013 12:34 pm

Hello Everyone,

I am looking towards a career in the air corps in 2014 when the cadetship recruitment begins again. I have already gone for it in 2012 but i am trying to pull out every stop now before i go again to ensure i have the best chance of getting in? Can anyone recommend anything to do like a weekend course or first aid knowledge or anything like this that would help my chances of getting in? I know about the reserve defence forces and the visit to baldonnel and have acquired these two already. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance

Hi Gally2,

Have you done any flying yet? A few hours in your logbook usually looks quite good, at least they know you haven't had any bad experiences, motion sickness etc.

Get learning some Gaeilge! Extra points are awarded for having a conversation in Irish with one of the Officers around the same time as your interview. This could put you ahead of the others. I think its just conversational, the interview is not conducted in Irish. Also, extra points are awarded if you a member of the Reserve Defence Forces (RDF), maybe something to look into? A Pilot Officer in the IAC has some great opportunities but it is primarily a military job and not a flying job. It's important that you demonstrate during the interview an interest in the military and not just flying.

Hope this helps,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I have four hours of training under my belt so far in AFTA in Cork Airport while doing my undergraduate course. Should that be enough? I am currently in UL doing a masters and so time is of the essence as you can imagine!!

That is great to hear that it is primarily a military job as I have always wanted to join the defence forces aswell as fly. What is the best way to show an interest in the military though apart from the reserve defence forces? I have not had any time to spend in the reserves or do any course to show that i may possess military skills although my undergrad course was in commerce and i have had four years of management modules in that. Is there anything i could do between here and the recruitment stage to help me show that?

Thank you so much for your response again

Hi Gally2,

I would say 4 hours is sufficient, I think that should be enough to demonstrate you don't hate it!

Outside of joining the RDF, I would suggest having a good understanding of the military hierarchy, how it is structured and how all of the elements interact (Air Corps, Navy, Army). Teamwork is obviously a big element so you can demonstrate your experiences with that. Take a look at the roles the Air Corps support so you can discuss / show your knowledge, e.g. Maritime Patrol, Garda Air Support, Emergency Aeromedical Service etc.

There are a few people on this forum who are / were in the Air Corps, maybe they could advise further?

Hi Mark,

That information will go a long way thank you very much. Hopefully some of the past/present Air Corps guys on this forum will see the post and hopefully respond but now we have to play the waiting game.

Regards,

Gally
