Continental IO 520 Question

Post by NATCA FWA »

Friend that that I fly with has a C210 with a Continental 520 recently replaced the number 6 cylinder with a TDI Nickel cylinder (supposed to be newest and latest in cylinders) something or other cylinder. Anyway, we have about 8 hours on the new cylinder but the head temp is running at about 406 which is about 40 degrees hotter than the other 5 cylinders, EGT is within 10 degrees of the other cylinders.

The concern of course is the head temp, we are wondering if we just need more break in time, or is there something else amiss.

Ask your engineer, he'll give you the most straight forward and correct answer.

He contacted the cylinder manufacturer and they are saying that it will take about 50 hours for the cylinder to be broken in, well with avgas being almost $5 per gallon US, well we all know how expensive that break in period would be. I can see 5 to 10 hours but not 50.
