Apologies if this is a silly question, but anyway...

Is is possible to do an aircraft maintaince course in Ireland? I don't mean an apprenticeship, I mean part time, or over a short period of time. I am especially interested in microlights (rotax engines etc.) and thinking about a purchace. I would like to be able to work on it myself. I have a fairly good trechnical knowlege base, but no experience working on aircraft.

i would think you now will need a B1 license and add the piston eng. module,its all gone very regulated(heavily).i dont know the scope on the 'part-M ' license which i think is towards GA,find out about this,im sure 1 or 2 members here may be able to help with this side.Thinnk you should look at the commercial side of things because if you go B1/B2 its more aimed at this,because things like ECAM,EICAS,FBW etc must be done.

Suppose I want to get an engineers license to maintain the piston engine in my single engine cessna. What do I need to do? Can I do whatever it is, part time? If I did a course like this:

you need to get employment (ie apprenticeship) to go to that in DIT! say if you took an apprenticeship with air atlanta/ryanair you'l be in DIT for your third i think year doing the modules.

however not sure about self-study here in ireland,I know Oxford do it in the UK,and a place called brooklands college.Im also not sure about light aircraft maintenance,maybe someone at kilrush could help ya there on the exact requirements

once you pass the module exams all youl need to do is work for 2/3 years OTJ and youl get the B2/B1 but if your an apprentice youl be on the job in year 2.i wouldnt advise anyone to sit modules without on the job training,i did and what a mistake,after the OTJ a lot of things become much clearer.Im gonna be doing A license and continuing to B2 after.However thats the commercial aviation route.

Theres a few places where you can sit exams if your enrolled in a course,Part-147 approved :

IT Carlow
Shannon aerospace
Air Atlanta (have approval but dont set exams)
DIT
PARC avaition

i know theres one more but i dont remember where.

If the Microlight is on a permit to fly, then you can do all the maintenece your self without any previous experience.

If it is on a C of A, then you will need a EASA B1.2 AML
