Turns out your 18,000hr lake amphib high king check pilot has a famous flight school;

and learned to fly out the back of his house in an 85hp Aeronca 7DC Champ. The field that was their runway was 120m long/400feet from fence to fence. House visits to places with clear approaches were considered down to 76m/250ft if there was an uplsloping landing ground. Slow flying was practiced by formation flying with a car to see how slow one could fly in formation. Doubt many today could manage that regardless of time or qualification.
