English is the language of international aviation. In smaller regional airports it may or may not be spoken. What's worse is mixed environments where local crews speak the local language to ATC and international flights speak english. You get much less of a picture of what's going on. France is apparently notorious for this.

In 1976, there was a horrendous crash in Yugoslavia when an Inex Adria DC-9 collided with a BA Trident over the Zagreb VOR at FL330. 113 fatalities. The DC9 and ATC were talking to each other in Serbo-Croat so the Trident crew were clueless about the conflicting traffic until the left wing of the DC9 cut through the cockpit.

Its the same with places like lanzarote and turkey is the same

The same thing happened in the MD-82/Shorts 360 collision at CDG some years ago. ATC speaking French to one crew and English to the other.

The French are the worst in Europe for it. The Spanish and Italians have getting just as bad in recent years too.
