Thank's for the update trimflyingclub,
Perhaps I should rephrase my original post to state fixed wing aircraft op's
. (now someone will post saying that an aircraft was seen landing on........) military helis can and do land anywhere they require for training and operational reasons.
I'm not sure, but I think the Government would prefer to keep their option's opened. Gormanston ceased to be an active Air Corp military base, by shutting down op's, but perhaps they want to keep it usable, for when required.
When the British military cease op's at an airfield, they normally put on a "care & maintainance" basis for a number of years, just in case. I dont think Irish military have a similar system, but just let it remain dormant instead.
btw-had a walk around Trim town to-day. Didn't get out to the field
