I've both a digital SLR and compact digital. A lot of the time the compact digital is perfect. It's a little old at this stage but for what its worth the compact is an Olympus 765UZ with 4MP and 10x optical zoom. That's roughly the equivalent of a 300mm lens.

The digital SLR is a Canon 400D and I tend to use it more for learning the skills of photography and in areas where the compact is weak (name low light)

I don't take many photos when I'm flying at the moment - still in a post-PPL learning phase- but when I do, I tend to bring the compact camera. It's relatively small, light and easy to use with one hand.

I would repeat the advice oft given - buy the camera you'll actually carry around!!
If you think that photography might be a serious hobby then consider the SLR. If you just want to take good quality photos then there's are loads of really useful compacts - some with very good zoom lenses.

These two sites give really good info on camera performance

These are some of mine comparing the two types
Olympus Compact

Canon SLR

I'll bring both out to EIWT if you would like to see them sometime.

They're some fantastic pictures OTN,

The Canon EOS 400D is a bit out of my price range at 650 euro.....
At the time i posted i had a lot of vouchers to redeem and was gonna buy a serious camera. Instead i redeemed them for House accessories, Car accessories and Grocery places.

I will be buying one before the summer though, (need one for the RIAT) And may stick to a Compact Digital, as they are more practicle

My good friend P McD has a serious Cannon G5 and is getting the G9 soon. so i'll just let him take pics for me.

Thanks for your info OTN.

Hi everyone,

I have a Canon EOS 400D with an 18-55mm and a 70-300mm IS USM lense (have a Canon Speedlite 430EZ flash but that has no relevance to zoom photography!)

I wish there were more fixed and rotor wing down my part of the country, I must go to a few places sometime during the year and get a few more snaps, I'm kinda thirsty for a few more aviation shots to add to the collection

Got a Canon SLR Rebel XT which I got someone to bring in from the US for me, it cost $300, what a bargain and a good camera. All you need is a european adaptor for the battery, if you know someone coming back for the States that is the route to go especially with the euro being so strong

Can you imagine getting your mitts on one of these lenses:

EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM - (Coming out this month)

Ask santa nicely..

As for the states, buying equipment over there is an absolute must, lenses over here are extremely overpriced, I agree.
