ever hear of 'balanced regional development'?? Ireland needs a counterweight to the overheating sprawling urban chaos that is the Dublin metropolitan zone. This has been recommended time after time by independent experts for the last 40 years, but little has been done to bring it about, save for investment in Shannon. It's the role of government to ensure that their policies are implemented. One of those is the above-mentioned 'balanced regional development' but in this case it is a fantasy policy intended to buy votes outside of Dublin. Very little is actually being done.
And also, why did the government maintain a 25% share in Aer lIngus if not to use it in the national interest. The argument that it shouldn't intervene because of commercial interests is simplistic at best.
