Ryanair has confirmed that the ?27.5 million upgrade of Waterford airport, including a runway extension, will not be enough to persuade Ryanair to resume services at the airport because the runway will still be too short by 2 metres, Fine Gael Waterford candidate Cllr Jim D'Arcy has revealed.

"Ryanair has confirmed to me that 'it would be unwise to make the investment unless the improved technical characteristics met the requirements of potential airline clients'. Unfortunately the runway needs to be 2 metres longer to persuade Ryanair to resume flights from Waterford. This is particularly ironic given that Ryanair ran its first scheduled passenger service from Waterford to London Gatwick in 1985.
