Waterford's New Runway Still Too Short?

    by newboycork » Sun May 13, 2007 10:29 am

    Hi all,

A politician in Waterford is claiming that the soon-to-be extended runway at Waterford is still to short for Ryanair's 737-800s. See:

    http://www.sbac.co.uk/community/cms/con ... =16032&t=0

Is there any substance to this or is it general election fever gone mad? The politician in question, or at least his canvassers, is claiming this is a deliberate move to keep O'Leary out.

Ive been told that the Runway is big enough for Ryanair's 737 and the A320. Im sure if it was true they could just add the 2 metres anyway down in the 03 side.

Do you think the airport would be that stupid, I don't think so they have being planning this extension with a long time so they will know the length of runway needed. This is just another ploy by politicians to get votes

    You mean a Gulfstream 4SP and a Gulfstream 5 - N1JN.
and BTW Ryanair would probably need 2,000mtrs, allowing for displaced threshhold etc. also a large wad of cash for 'route promotion' etc

Isn't it also that FR bought low rated engines for the 738 fleet since they have a longer lifespan? I seem to remember something about that when LDY was at issue.

Ryanair has confirmed that the ?27.5 million upgrade of Waterford airport, including a runway extension, will not be enough to persuade Ryanair to resume services at the airport because the runway will still be too short by 2 metres, Fine Gael Waterford candidate Cllr Jim D'Arcy has revealed.

Maybe ,but it's Ryanair who is saying the runway is too short . Sounds like more crap from Ryanair, honestly if a 3,000 meter runway and a state of the art passenger terminal was built , Ryanair would still find something to complain about  .

Surely two meters isn't going to prevent commercial aircraft from operating safely from EIWF.

"Ryanair has confirmed to me that 'it would be unwise to make the investment unless the improved technical characteristics met the requirements of potential airline clients'. Unfortunately the runway needs to be 2 metres longer to persuade Ryanair to resume flights from Waterford. This is particularly ironic given that Ryanair ran its first scheduled passenger service from Waterford to London Gatwick in 1985.

Sounds like they there not really interested in operating flights from EIWF but are going to make it sound like someone else is to blame.

    You also have to think.

    Does the airport want ryanair???

ok they will boost the pax numbers and everyone will be happy getting cheap fares, but at the end of the day the airport will get nothing from FR the only way to make money would be from facilitys, like car parking restaurants etc

    Waterford Airport

I'm delighted that Waterford is being giving the funding to allow it to expand. It makes a huge difference to the state of the airport a few years ago when closure was a real possibility.
I wish all the team every sucess in the exciting future the airport has.
