Yes,the core of the turbo prop engine is similar to a turbo jet,it uses a gas turbine to do move the prop, instead of expanding the hot exhaust through a nozzle to produce thrust,it uses the exhaust gas to move the turbine.

however this aircraft would not be classified as a jet.

Bob......would it not be called a turbo jet instead of a turbo prob which is what it is???....the prop area is what drives the aircraft forward, only a small amount of additional thrust is created by the "jet". A jet fan is a jet fan, a turbo jet is a turbo jet and a turbo prop is....a turbo prop....Ireland bought PC-9Ms...these are turbo props....not jets. .....but i would just like to know does anyone know what the cause of the fire was after?

A turbo jet would be the jet engine on the fouga i think or early jet engines, the maribor 6(i think on the fouga) engine.turbo jets are old and noisy,no bypass stages, like you have on the modern engines which are turbofan with probably triple bypass stages, and very quiet because of the bypass stages.
