Here's two photos of one of the US VC-25s preparing fopr the approach into Shannon, taken over Limerick yesterday. Anyone know why it was there?

Fueling mid air is more than likely only done as a last resort...

Mark N, it seems to be a normal exercise for Air Force one, the logistics of arranging even something seemingly easy as a Fuel Stop is serious hassle and time consuming that they do air to air instead.

Hi guys,

The VC-25 was "SAM twenty nine thousand" making a fuel stop on its way from Riyadh carrying an American delegation who were paying their respects following the death of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd.

Regards,
Mark

Cosmic, of course they aren't going to do air to air refueling as a normal
exercise on Air Force one. Why would they choose to fly 20 feet away from another aircraft with the president on board when they could simply
land and refuel? Which do you think is safer?

Oops, I think I have been caught shooting my big mouth off again. I was sure I read in the papers about the time George W went to visit the troops in Iraq that they refueled midair. However after a spot of googling I can not find the article. I thought it was used on occasion, but seemingly only for emergencies. I stand corrected!
