Two injured as aircraft crashes after take-off

TWO men were injured when a light aircraft crashed shortly after take-off.

The aircraft crash landed in a field at Ferskill, Co Longford, about three miles from Granard, just before 6pm on Saturday evening.

The pilot was local man Cornelius Kiernan who is in his forties. His passenger was named locally as Mick O'Connell from Virginia, Co Cavan, who is also in his forties.

Two local men checking a flock of sheep in the area saw the plane in difficulty and watched as it crashed. They and a number of people at an airfield nearby, which Mr Kiernan runs commercially, immediately went to the assistance of the two occupants who were trapped in the wreckage.

Both men were injured and rushed by ambulance from the crash scene to Mullingar Hospital. Last night the pilot's wife Marcella Kiernan said both men had been very lucky.

"I heard the crash as it happened just down the road from the house. But by the time I got down it was all over and they were taken to Mullingar Hospital."

She said her husband had facial injuries, including a broken jaw. Mr O'Connell also survived with minor injuries, sustaining a broken leg in the crash.

Wishing both involved a speedy recovery.
