Galway Airport Sold

Post by Bob » Tue Nov 05, 2013 7:54 pm

Looks like Galway City/County Counsel just splash out 1.1 million euro on a plot of land in the middle of nowhere. Looks like it might make a good airport, not so sure what else you'd do with it though. :?

How long before Galway comes to regret this, and wants to build a new airport?

It would make a good GA airfield with say a flying club and maybe a skydive centre, welcoming GA visitors from home and abroad and the Air Corps and Coastguard. After all the infrastructure is already there. I'm sure someone has thought of that already! Oh Wait!

One thing for sure what Galway doesn't need is another piece of development land no one wants.

Galway now holds the Irish record for the greatest number of disused or unused airfields in the State.

Have they closed it? Or stated any intensions to close it or to keep it open?

There has been no other communication as to their intentions into the future. From all the contradictory comments from local politicians. I don't think they've thought it through.

what to do with Galway Airport?
Just have a look at how Oban is operated by the local authority. A really fine GA field.
As for the local users in Galway Airport especially the club and other businesses, they have the benefits under the landlord and tenants legislation to continue using the property as long as they like............ the local authority can not stop them using the airport and all of its facilities.......... they bought it with those tenants.
pity for the staff that were made unemployed though.

of course the big question is ...........why has the tax payer bust bailed out the chamber of commerce to the tune of €1.1m............................who are the chamber of commerce?. who has been given the present of our money? why?

My suggested answer .........because if the airport was liquidated it would have sold for a fraction of €1.1m and the chamber would be ............(shall we say) short of cash

Why not a liquidators sale of the facility to the private sector and let it operate away just like Weston. Why did this not happen?

Everyone is asking that question. But there is no reason it can't continue to operate as an airfield in some form or other.

Has the license lapsed though? Any reason they wouldn't renew it?

It seems ludicrous that a city of nearly a quarter of a million people would be with out an airport of some kind.

Can the club operate there if the licence has lapsed? if not they may be gone in 2 or 3 weeks....

That's a good question about the licence. The licence being cancelled is the Commercial Licence. A Private Aerodrome Licence could be taken up but again that hasn't been mentioned anywhere. But IAA does allow flight training at an unlicensed airfield within certain requirements. The flying club is non commercial.

As the people who bought the airport are non aviation. They probably haven't considered this yet although I'm sure. Undoubtedly this will be brought to their attention.

A report in, I believe last Friday's Indo stated " The council was pleased to purchase a 'brownfield' site ready for devolopment so close to the City centre" does't sound too promising. Hopefully just speculation on behalf of the reporter.

Brownfield site.................the country is full of them. next we will be told that its stratecically located near the motorway and the oranmore rail station ..............oh i forgot we have already been spun that yarn..........so the last bastian of the hopeless excuses will be 'job creation' as if another empty site will create a single job (in fact this deal got rid of several jobs already).
looks like another 'spend the money and then come up with any reason to justify it'.......................will we ever learn?

why would it be 'lost'? change of owner we are told, thats all. hopefully the flying club will use their rights to continue as usual. maybe they will even share it with the rest of us.

I'm sure it will back in use as a GA field soon enough. Not to mention Skydiving. It's far from lost. By next Summer I'm sure it'll be busier than it ever was.
