Galway Airport

Remember when Galway Airport was famous for not being very welcoming to GA? Well I'm very glad to report that is no longer the case. There is a new manager running the place. His name is John Madden and he's an absolute gentleman.

John does not have an aviation background and so he is not caught up in the small minded carry on that so often plagues our sport. There's a fantastic facility at Galway that is fully available to all our GA pilots and the good news is that landing fees have been reduced and so has fuel cost. So it's now incredibly affordable. It's what our GA community deserve and now we finally have it.

There is a small GA Pilots Lounge with Internet access and a kettle ready to go. Ronnie or Andrea are in the Tower and Pat and his team are on the ground to help you in every way possible. Call (091) 755 569 or email The city as you all know is just a stone throw.

Skydive Ireland has established a new Full Time base there which means that the Tower will be open more frequently, especially on weekends and in the longer summer evenings. So come visit and make use of a fantastic facility that is now fully available to our GA community.

We'll keep you all posted about the Open Day that we are planning for late Summer. It's gonna be good fun.

The Tower is open today from 10am - 5pm. So drop in and say hello.
There's 1200M of the black stuff laying waiting to taste Ur tyres :)

Blue Skies,

Hi there
Well done to all concerned. Are they still charging that ridiculous "navigation" charge? Best of luck to you in your new base.

A very welcome change, that attitude will attract many more GA visitors.

Thanks for well wishes :)

The navigation charge is definitely gone. I think everyone agrees that was utterly rediculas.

So GA now inherits the fine facilities of Galway Airport. The facilities are fantastic and we are very excited about being here.

Check out our Facebook page for some nice aerial shots of the Airvans and the Galway Bay coastline from above." onclick=";return false;

Looking forward to having everyone over to visit.

Thank you. Sounds like good news indeed.

However, at least for the moment, the biggest problem remains: the airport is closed on weekends. This makes the airport basically useless for visiting GA pilots looking for a day out or even a long weekend in the Galway area.

Are there any hopes of the airport becoming available on weekends soon?

The good news is that from April onwards the airport will be open every weekend. Your right that most GA pilots are out and about on weekends.

The more interest in flying in there and using the facility the more justify able it is for the tower to open to visiting traffic. With such a terrible wet winter most grass strips need time to repair so Galway is the ideal spot to visit and great for getting the cob webs out from winter by doing a few circuits on a massive hard runway.

Thank you. Indeed I just received the same info via email from the airport management. Still somewhat restricted opening times on weekends (1100-1600), but of course much better than nothing.

Also, parking charges for light aircraft seem to be down to 10 euros a day (from something like 30 or so if I remember correctly).

All very good. And yes, go there to support them and show them that the airport is needed by GA and a benefit for the area.

When skydiving is going on the tower will remain open. So those opening hours will be more flexible.

Of course if there are plenty of visitors to the airport. The chances of those hours being extended are greater.

It's great to see the place becoming GA friendly again. I always liked going there, as the local Club are a nice bunch and gave a good welcome and they used to hold great Fly-Ins (hint, hint). They (the airport)even hosted an Oyster festival in the terminal one year and it was a great success. The Westonites used to include it in their cross-country training and it was always handy for the city, if you wanted to go up there for a weekend.I wish Skydive Ireland and the revamped airport the very best!

Ah! beautiful Galway!
Where the Airfield was stolen, an aerodrome built, and GA clouded out.

"What goes around comes around"

Good to see an open door once again in the "City of avoid the transition".
I sincerely hope, and pray, that the door shall remain open to the ga sector here, too much bad feeling passed through the pockets of past days between us, and i still have the invoices and letters to prove it!

Lets hope this is a new beginning for all concerned.
