Aviators Guide BONUS - Garmin GDB file

Post by aviatorsguide » Mon May 23, 2011 9:43 pm

8)

As a special bonus to those buying online at http://www.FlightGuide.me" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; we will be sending all customers a Garmin GDB file with all the co-ordinates from the flight guide edition 2. This version be available from mid next week, as the first print run is sold out bar our demo copies. This will be a huge time saver as well a valuable inflight cockpit safety aid. The information will be on screen in your nearest/user page screen when you need it, and not floating around in a book thats floating about (or forgotten). The waypoints will have a custom symbol graphic so you can positively identify the source of the co-ordinates. Needless to say when the come from our suyrvey GPS, they won't be somewhere in the deep blue ocean....

Careful how you fly it.....

Lorcan/William,
Just received mine this morning. Looks really good with a seeming emphasis towards the microlight
community. I never realised there were so many fields available for us.
Looking forward to comparing it with Kevin's guide :-)

hats off to ya lads, its a smashing publication, i cant imagine how long it must have taken to do the aerial surveys alone and the gallons of fuel burnt in the process ! lots of new landing sites for both light aircraft and microlight heads to explore , my head will be stuck in this book for a while , so much so my wife has stopped talking to me already ! thanks lads !

121, Rudy, Hedgehopper - thanks for the positive feedback. We are working all the time to improve the product for the future, and note we have now emailed a download link to all those who purchased on http://www.FlightGuide.me" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the FREE Garmin GDB file to accompany the book. The information you need, in hard format and soft format.

Mr Garmin if you' re on frequency - contact us on aviatorsguide@gmail.com and we can send it to you too.... be nice to replace all those R's in the wrong places cluttering up our screens.

:D

Just tweaked that you can open a Garmin GDB file in Google Earth, which makes the download a useful part of your flight planning routine. Or simply an interesting virtual tour of the destinations now available in the book.

Not sure if you are aware, but there is a tool called "GPS Babel" (free) that you can use to convert the Garmin database file into other format for other GPS systems if you want to do that.

I can help you out a bit on that if you want to do it and need any help.

Hello all,

If using gps babel, you will have to delete blank space between double barrelled names,
at least thats what i had to do for pocket fms to recognise.

FYI, I think Kilpatrick has been left out of the GDP file.

Anyone know if using GPS Babel how to upload the new waypoints file so that it does not add to existing waypoint markers, eg I now have EIWT and Weston. thanks.

The only way that I can think of is my converting it to a text file first, then removing those airports that you already have, and then converting it to the format that you want.

Which GPS is it that you are using? If it is PocktFMS, I can help.

I used GPSBabel to convert it to .csv text and then set it up as an Excel file.
Hand edited this to suit Flymap format for my gps. Bit tedious but didn't take too long.
If you want either file, let me know.

All I've done is just delete the additional waypoints I didnt need, such as Weston etc etc.

You be amazed how far off some of the Garmin waypoints are.... Try Bantry. Some of the local lakes are named wrong too. Try Lough Owel.....If you have a Garmin there will be the little "R" in a cirlcle for alot of private strips. I cant delete those, but for our home base the Garmin waypoint is far enough out that you wouldnt want to be using it in marginal wx. GPS is a personal thing I suppose and everyone has thier own settings and preferences. I'm a big fan of having all the points installed notwithstanding certain duplication.
