need gps on tight budget..

Post by aaronh »

Does anyone have affordable 2nd hand gps systems or other solutions for a gps system for as little as possible?
Just systems for simple PPL use.
Thanks in advance.

hi Aaron

The Sept mag of FII has a piece on a GPS system (Pocket FMS) that can be used on a GPS equipped Smartphone etc with a free trial. Probably worth a trial if you have a Smartphone.

Else try and pick up a secondhand Lowrance 500, maybe on Ebay or something. Basic b/w screen with no names of towns, but still gets me around!!

Regards

Willo

i second what willo says. we have been using an ordinary car sat nav with pocket fms on a sd card for 2 years trouble free and its a super piece of software. so if ya have a car sat nav give it a go , with a free months trial its a no brainer.

What sat-nav are you using? i was looking into that this week and most newer sat-navs don't run on Windows CE anymore..

Hi there,
I use a Magellan 300, which is basically a hillwalker's GPS.It's old and stone-age to use but is quite efficient for it's size.

I can offer a Skyforce Skymap, aviation GPS recently removed (working) from aircraft as part of panel upgrade. It's basic, B&W, touchscreen and has all airfields, airports, VORs, NDBs, user-configurable waypoints and airspace, which can be easily upgraded on the net. It also includes a handy tracker facility which constantly reads out your position relative to the nearest airfield. Good for emergencies and ATC interrogation! Euro 120. Call 086 8144770 if interested.

I dont know how simple a system you want, but if you have a relatively new nokia phone, such as a n97 or a e52 you could use its gps function, maps/my position and it will track your position, or simply insert your destination and the phone will give you a pointer, speed, distance to, and time to destination. and its free
