Mike Kilo, I spoke too soon, after having a look at the AIP it does appear that there are lower minimums for straight in approaches in Ireland, and on further research I see that this is also the case in the US, just not the case in the one VOR/DME approach that I used to fly a lot.
Lower minima is probably what's behind it.
My Initial ignorance just goes to show that if you are not using those IFR skills, the knowledge fades away.
Ah well it will come back once I start doing it again.
