Anybody care to offer an explanation on why Weston has gone to the expense of installing a VOR given the proximity of the Baldonnel VOR?

I reckon it's so VOR DME approaches can be carried out onto runway 07/25.

Indeed Mike Kilo It does indeed appear strange as to why it is needed at all. I am at a loss, unless it is so that they can have straight in approaches, but I fail to see the value in this, because as far as I am aware the minimums for a VOR/DME approach are the same if you go straight in or circle to land.

Maybee the IAA in their self assumed (but very questionable) infinite wisdom do not allow circle to land.

Mike Kilo, I spoke too soon, after having a look at the AIP it does appear that there are lower minimums for straight in approaches in Ireland, and on further research I see that this is also the case in the US, just not the case in the one VOR/DME approach that I used to fly a lot.

Lower minima is probably what's behind it.

My Initial ignorance just goes to show that if you are not using those IFR skills, the knowledge fades away.

Ah well it will come back once I start doing it again.

I might have said that the military are also free to switch on and off their VOR anytime they wished. Maybe it was a reliability issue?
