by OSCAR BRAVO » Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:05 am

A search is under way off the Carlingford Peninsula in Dundalk Bay tonight after reports that a light aircraft came down in the area.

The coast guard was alerted to the incident at around 8.20pm this evening.

The Irish Coast Guard Helicopter from Dublin and the RNLI lifeboat from Clogherhead are involved in the operation.

AdvertisementOn the shore, the Clogherhead coast guard unit and Drogheda coast guard unit are helping with the search.

So far no debris has been found and there have been no official reports of any missing aircraft.

However, the search is expected to continue for several hours.

He was just out for a local bimble in his C42, had taken off from a new airfield in Riverstown Co. Louth, did a local flight and landed back into the airfield safely. Upon seeing the Coast guard heli searching later in the evening he put two and two together and rang the coast guard to let them know he was safe and sound. The search was then stood down.
