History of EI-AMT?

EI-AMT was first registered on 25/9/1962 to M. McCarthy and based in Carnmore, Co. Galway. Change of ownership to Trans World Helicopters, Shannon, on 19/5/1967, then cancelled for the reg following a crash in the Lugna Quilla Mountains on 29/6/1967. Previous reg was N4088Y, Serial no. 0288

This is the info I have on my database.
EI-AMT Cessna 185A Skywagon pilot Sam Pratt op by Tara Exploration noted at fly-in Laffina airstrip Thurles on 02.06.1963. (No mention of
[amphibious] floats then).
EI-AMT Cessna 185A based Dublin 23.09.1962 10.05.1967
EI-AMT Cessna 185A based Shannon 19.05.1967 29.06.1967
One point about Carnmore, it did not become operational until 1974.
So if the 185 was ever based in Galway, then it must have been at Oranmore. Pete Hornfeck (RIP) his excellent 1999 Irish Civil Aircraft Register, basically correct, gives slightly different details. The info posted by chap20277 is from Pete's publication. I got my info about the aircraft from Roger Caird - Dublin.

You mention a strip in Laffina Hugo, that almost on a direct track from home to (knock) Fermoy - a route I often fly when going fishing in the 180. Must have a look for it, or remains of same.
Opened 05.1963 and closed 1978. Only a field now. The strip was just E and parallel to the railway line at N52.36-13.355 W07.56-19.165. The strip was NE/SW 303m. I'll e-mail you an aerial photo of the field.
Seen a lovely yellow piper cub sitting out in a field there in Ballyporeen, just the a few miles further on that track. Idyllic looking as we flew over, and seems that field is in regular use. Have photo I must send on.
I heard of a strip in the Ballyporeen area, but that was all, so a photo
would be most helpful.

Right on two counts - I am involved in a long line, and have legally flown inches from the water for hundreds of hours. Cant quite get the floatplane into the river blackwater yet, think the locals wouldnt see the fun side of it.
Ahh...was that you flying around Athlone today then?

Back to EI-AMT, I flew it in Shannon back in the 60's, it was certainly an impressive aircraft for the time and could produce quite a swing with 300 gee gees up front. I have photos taken at Shannon and at the Laffina (Thurles/Holycross) display in 1963. It was flown by Sam Pratt & Joe Durnin, and operated for Tara Exploration and also for Trans World Helicopters at Shannon. EI-AMT crashed near the summit of Lugnaquilla in 1967? and was written off.

Yes, the 180/185's were designed for short and rough field ops, both very rugged aircraft. Of course we were all rared on taildraggers in the 50's and early 60's until the spamcans arrived. You are right about Headfort, I attended at least one display there in the 60's and I'm pretty sure 'MT was there. It was definitely used for joyriding at the time and may have been at the Oranmore displays 65/66. I will email photos if you send me a PM
