Arann Islands

Post by Lambada Crazy »

Hi all,

Has anyone got any pics of the runways in the Arann Islands or any tips for landing there, hoping to do the 3 of them this friday!

Much Appreciated,

LC

I flew a group out in an Airvan a couple of months back. Great trip to do. Routed out from Cliffs of Moher/Doolin and landed on Inis Oirr. One of the best flights for scenery you can do in this country(Donegal is high on the list too).

The runways on all three islands are pretty much in line with each other..ie take off on one and you are immediately on final for the next. PPR required and one phone call does not cover all three. I made that mistake! Had arranged Inis Oirr and when the group decided they wanted to make for the drinking establishments of Kilronan instead we took of for Inis Mor-overflying the middle island. The runways are pretty much on headland and circa 500m. What are you flying? The Airvan is an 8 seater and managed it comfortably(we were 5 POB). If I remember correctly the airfields are no longer under the management of Aer Arann Islands but are now managed by island co-ops. The number for Inis Mor is (099)61109-they should be able to put you in contact with the other two.

Great flight and one of the highlights of my flying career to date. Enjoy!

PS If you go into Kilronan for lunch say hello to Michael the taxi driver from the skydivers! He went to great lengths to find us a B&B..Top man!

Not bad for a cheap camera.......

My cousin just bought an SLR......

I might "borrow" it for future flights......

I enjoy taking pics almost as much as flying.....

Almost

Not sure if it is still the case but in 2007 when out to the Islands on a few occasions, there were no formal landing fees but a donation to the local RNLI was sought. A great idea.

Who knows the day one of us might need them?

PS: Wx conspired to prevent me getting there this year.

Great thread. Well done to all who took the time to upload photos!

That last pic above brings back memories-on my visit when flying over the wreck of the MV Plassey - the crowd in the back started singing the opening music from "Father Ted"!

Thanks guys for the great replies! Much appreciated! What are the approaches to the runways like? Any obstacles?
