Posting Problems (Hopefully a Solution!)

Post by mark » Fri Jul 04, 2008 8:34 pm

Hi guys,

A number of people have contacted me recently reporting varoius problems associated with logging in, posting and PM'ing.

It seems there are two seperate problems with similar symptoms, I can solve one but not the other. With complex software running on this website some bugs are bound to pop up (remember a few months ago!). These are usually ironed out by upgrading the software. Unfortunately the developers of this forum software have moved onto a completely new design with is not compatible with the overall software running on this website. Many developers say they will attempt to bridge the various components but I haven't come accross one yet

So anyone having problems logging in should try the following. (I also noted that the email you receive after getting a PM will not link you to your inbox).

1. Visit www.flyinginireland.com and click on Forum
2. Click on "Log In" on the top right hand corner of the forum menu
3. You will be taken to the log-in page where you should enter you username and password and then click "LOGIN"
4. You will be taken back to the forum, you are not logged in yet
5. Now click on "FlyingInIreland Forum Index", when the page refreshes you will be logged in. This can be confirmed by looking for the "Log Out [Username]" on the top right - if it says log out then you're logged in.

Basically the only difference to the normal log-in method is that you need click "FlyingInIreland Forum Index" after you enter your username and password. I've no idea why this is, maybe something to do with sessions (?) but if anyone has a clue about what it might be I would appreciate if you let me know.

Any other problems, please post to this thread to keep them all together.
Regards,
Mark Dwyer

Hi Mark,

I have always had the “log out” showing, so that's not my particular problem.
Just can't post when I want to, although I have managed to
send a few messages to the Airfield Quiz hosted by Papa 8 after at
least 50 attempts to post them. Anyway, Thanks again Mark.

Hugo.

Well if this message go's then I managed four posting's today. I wonder if the posting problem has been solved. One other observation, they seem to get through during quite period's and are blocked during busy time's.
Although I did try late last night and no joy. Possible connection ????. No
pun intended.

Nope still the same. Attempt No. 7

Just a thought. Does this problem replicate when using your account from another computer to the one you usually use?
It only takes two things to fly:--- airspeed and money.

I regularly use my laptop running the latest Internet Explorer, my Macbook which runs Safari, my PC at home which has an older Internet Explorer and a whole load of different computers in UCC without any problems.

I was experining problems when mark first re-vamped te site a couple of months ago but its fine now.

Hugo,
I suggest you download and install "Mozilla Firefox".
When asked do you want to transfer settings from Internet Explorer tick "No".
It will be a bit of a pain to enter the addresses by hand but it's wotrh a try
even if only for the Flying in Ireland site.
Good luck,
L.B.L.

Thanks L.B.L,

Papa8 e-mailed me with a couple of other idea's. I'll try those first and
if they don't work I'll certainly have a go at "Mozilla Firefox".

Attempt 5

Do indeed.

Firefox is a great web browser. It comes with an automatic spell checker and you can download other extras to customise it to your own needs.

It's fantastic and totally free.

Hugo
When you hit submit do you get the following message
"No post mode specified"
If so then this is also related to the login issue. It seems that we are on timed login sessions, ie. if there is no activity for a bit (not sure but somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes I think) then you are automatically logged out on the server. When you go to submit a post you can sometimes get logged out while typing and have to login again to send it.

The easiest solution is to make sure you are logged in as per Marks instructions and then hit the preview button every few minutes to refresh your session.

If you do get the above message then hit the login link and preceed as normal. Make sure to hit the "FlyingInIreland Forum Index" link after login to validate the session and then hit the back button on your browser a few times to get back to the post you typed, then hit submit. I've had to do this for the last few posts I've submitted (I'm using Firefox).

Firefox. I just converted to Firefox from IE. And its much better (after a bit of styling to look like IE)

Anyway, The only problem I have now is that it won't let me stay logged in in FII.

Every other site works apart from FII.

Any ideas?

Thanks
