Air Field

Post by C152 » Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:18 am

I have noticed a wind sock in a field at Kilmacanoge beside the N11 its just beyond Bray, from the road the field seems to be a bit over grown, does anyone know if its operational. :?:

Hi 152,

This is new to me. Have'nt heard of any strip in that area.
Could you give some more details. Is it N or S of the village,
also is it E or W of the N11 and alongside the road itself?.
Co-ords or grids would be a big help.
I had a look at the Wicklow Co Co aerial photo's of the area
along the N11 from Wingfield in the N to Kilmurry in the S,
but nothing showed up.

Regards,
Hugo.

Correct me if i wrong but i think thats Mr Kane (the guy whos entorm crashed) landing pad, Deffo not flat enough for fixed wings in there!!!

On a side note, is there anywhere in that locality or even a slight bit further down the coast that could be used to hanger a Helicopter???

Need to find somewhere, even basic to leave it when it comes rather than using the garden as i dont want to be upsetting the neighbours

Yea i know of Newcastle, but i get the impression that Helicopters are not wanted down there  and im not sure if there is any space available either!!!! Location wise it would be perfect though!!!!!

Is there anywhere else either public or private in the area??

TINY
Hi there, I work for an Irish company that among other things manufactures aviation GPU's and engine start packs. (Please mark, this is not a commercial posting  ) . Not long ago I was asked to "help start" a turbine heli near Wicklow town. I can help you to investigate this location for potential. There is one heli operating from a hangar at this location and in the other shed (Doors not wide enough for 3 blade head!) was the other heli I was helping to start. It is not for me to offer you storage but could assist you with contacts if the location is attractive to you.

WRT the wind-sock near the N11. I live near enough and am not familiar with heli ops in the area. I could find out for certain for you but guess it may be a private residence in the area of Quill road.

One problem that EH may have in Newcastle is the "change of use" implications of buildings on the airfield. I know there is not universal local support to the operation of the airfield (to put it mildly!) so getting anything done or developed is a nightmare. There is a "Hangar" with some fixed wing stored but the bigger "Agri" shed which would accommodate several aircraft I suspect would have to be formally designated as a Hangar which I guess would have the air-rade sirens ringing among the locals.

Where that heli was stored is it out passed Wicklow golf club the old Brittas strip, there is an airstrip beside Powerscourt Gardens owned by the Slazengers they might be willing to store a heli. Yeah the field is on the Quill Road

Thanks 152. Looks like it's a helipad and not a strip. Now all I
have to do is find the Quill Road.
Interesting to hear that the old strip at Brittas bay is still in use
as a helipad. Any idea of the types and reg's of the two heli's.

G. I tried to post a PM to you but it seems reluctant to go??. I'll
try again.

Regards,
Hugo.

Brittas Bay hasnt been licensed since 1999 so planning would be required to really open up. A developer bought the land about 2 years ago.
Enstrom 280 & R44 were operating out of site up to 3 or 4 weeks ago anyway :!:

Thanks for the update on Brittas Bay, Sticksforward.
I would have been very surprised if the strip was ever reopened.
It looks as though it's destined to become just another housing
project.
Is that the same Enstrom that crashed. Any idea which R44 it was.

Hugo.

Hi Hugoj_air
I got your PM and replied this morning...hope it gets to you OK seems to be sitting in the Outbox and not Sent items

I have a pic of the downed Enstrom on my desk here from the local paper. Heli is on its left side, photo is of the underside. Totally destroyed by fire with exception of aft 1/2 of tail boom e.t.c.
