Yes don't bother learning to fly. That way when things pick up again there will be a pilot shortage and the money will go up for me. Joking aside, it's up to you. By the time you qualify the economy will have picked up again. Pilots always find jobs if they want them. Besides this isn't a recession....

In the brave new world of low cost Aer Lingus. Maybe they should sell it or give it someone who is prepared to look after it. It's a rare bird indeed. Christy Keane might be interested for his new museum at Weston. At least it would be hangared and flown then.

Just to caution you it's a 172RG G-BHVC, as in a retractable with a wobbly prop. A Cutlass. Thus qualifying as a complex aircraft for JAA purposes. But basically a 172.

Don't worry about the Duchess. It's well named, a lady to fly, contra rotating props and lacking any real vices. Beside by the time you actually get to fly it, you should be well briefed on it. I doubt it will ever happen for VFR. IFR arrivals and departures yes. But never VFR for trainig purposes.

It's the same risk as when you are over land. It's mostly psychological. It does occur to you when you are over water beyond gliding distance of land that if the engine stops pulling it's weight. I imagine you could but there are probably a considerable number of rules about the certification of the aircraft and equipment. Somehow I cannot see the NFC renting you their Cub and the banner towing equipment for a personal jaunt around Leinster house or something. :D

Absolutely not 'cleared to land'. Both are aerial work PPLs cannot be paid for either. Parachute pilots require CPLs. Don't know about banners. Yes there are some PPLs dropping skydivers at the moment on a waiver. But that waiver will end soon. They cannot be paid on a PPL.

From what I hear, Call early and prepare to hold. It gets pretty intense with two aircraft on the go.

As for pilots, well you can always ask. CPLs only though. That's a legal requirement. I believe they already have at least two full time pilots working for them. I think Stovepipe flies for them?

Maurice, it wasn't a requirement to have a CPL to instruct in the UK until the advent of the JAA. Same as here. Anyone with an Instructor's rating at the changeover was granted 'Grandfather' rights.
